I have always found a strange kind of comfort in looking up at the night sky. There is a quiet stillness to it, a sense that whatever chaos is unfolding down here on Earth, the stars remain indifferent, steady, and eternal. But after reading these chapters of Carl Sagan’s Cosmos, my relationship with that sky has fundamentally shifted. It is no longer just a beautiful backdrop; it is a vast, interconnected classroom. Through Sagan’s eyes, I’ve begun to see that the transition from ancient myth to modern astronomy wasn’t just a scientific revolution—it was a deeply emotional one. By decoding the mathematical harmony of the cosmos, we have finally gained the tools to understand our neighboring planets, only to realize that they hold up a terrifying mirror to the fragility of our own existence.
Before we had the math, we had stories. I often try to imagine what it must have been like for our ancestors, sitting around campfires, watching the stars move in perfect, predictable circles. It makes complete sense that they believed the universe revolved around us. It feels intuitive. But as Sagan details in “The Harmony of the Worlds,” the truth required us to let go of our ego. When Johannes Kepler discovered that planets move in ellipses, not perfect circles, he wasn’t just doing geometry—he was shattering the ancient assumption of heavenly perfection. And when Isaac Newton later unified the heavens and the Earth with his laws of gravity, he proved that the same force that pulls an apple from a tree also keeps the Moon in its orbit. I find that thought incredibly grounding. We are not separate from the universe; we are bound to it by the exact same rules.
With these universal rules in hand, we finally stopped guessing what our neighbors were like and started actually looking. What we found, particularly in “Heaven and Hell,” broke my heart a little. Venus, a planet so similar to Earth in size and mass, is a literal nightmare. It is trapped in a runaway greenhouse effect, its atmosphere choked with carbon dioxide, its surface hot enough to melt lead. Reading about Venus felt like reading a ghost story. This brought a sobering realization to the forefront of my mind: the current climate crisis we are facing isn’t actually killing the planet. The Earth has survived extremes of weather, intense volcanic and earthquake activity, and multiple ice ages. The planet always recovers. What the climate crisis is actually killing is us. The Earth will eventually heal and find a new equilibrium, but it will likely do so only after the human race has wiped itself out.
Then there is Mars. I have always been a bit of a romantic about the Red Planet, probably because, as Sagan explains in “Blues for a Red Planet,” humanity has been projecting its hopes onto Mars for over a century. From Percival Lowell’s desperate, mistaken belief in a dying civilization building canals, to our modern dreams of terraforming, we want so badly for Mars to be our backup plan. But the Viking landers showed us the truth: Mars is a cold, arid, beautiful desert. The ethical questions surrounding terraforming—whether we have the right to alter another planet’s ecosystem—make me deeply uncomfortable. If we cannot properly care for the lush, vibrant world we already have, what right do we have to try and conquer another?
Ultimately, reading these chapters felt like a wake-up call. The mathematical harmony that governs the stars has allowed us to read the histories of Venus and Mars. One is a scorched wasteland, the other a frozen desert. Suspended perfectly between them is the Earth, a rare, fragile oasis of life. The cosmos is vast and indifferent, but it has given us the tools to understand our place within it. The ultimate lesson I am taking away from Sagan is not just about the physics of the universe, but the urgent, deeply personal responsibility we all share to protect our place on the only home we have ever known—before the Earth decides to move on without us.
